BEWARE OF FRAUD

exists for aliens unlawfully present in the

New Religious Worker Regulations
On November 26, 2008 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
published the new religious worker regulations. These long-awaited regulations
significantly change the way that dioceses and religious communities sponsor
foreign born priests, sisters, brothers and other religious workers to work for the
Church in the U.S. The regulations, effective on the same day of issuance
November 26, 2008, affect both special immigrant and nonimmigrant (R-1) religious
workers.
U.S.Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has clarified to CLINIC that
religious visas, (R-1s), issued prior to November 26, 2008, will remain valid even
though the visas were not supported by an approved petitions. CLINIC will ask
for further clarification from Customs and Border Protection as to whether those
individuals with valid visas issued prior to November 26, 2008, will be able to have
their status extended at entry with a valid visa without filing for an extension of
their status.
The regulations were effective immediately.

Catholic Church in the United States.
Mission Statement
The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) is a 501(c) (3)
organization that provides a range of legal and non-legal support
services to 173 member agencies comprised mainly of Catholic
diocesan immigration programs. Our member agencies serve
low-income immigrants seeking family reunification, citizenship, and
protection from persecution and violence.
