Some Worries about Obama's National Security Picks

Barack Obama on Monday introduced the top figures in his national security team, including Sen. Hillary Clinton, retired Marine General James Jones, and current Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Cato scholar Christopher A. Preble has been critical of the picks. "Obama's decision to turn to a cadre of insiders who refused to speak out against the Iraq war before it began, and who have since deflected calls to end the mission in a timely fashion, suggests that we will only get more of the same," commented Preble.

The Benefits of Port Liberalization

In contrast to the rest of India, where it is the government that predominantly owns and manages ports, the Indian state of Gujarat has implemented various forms of port liberalization since the 1990s. In "The Benefits of Port Liberalization," Cato scholar Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar argues that Gujarat's port liberalization should serve as a model for the rest of India and other developing countries.

The Case against Government Intervention in Energy Markets

The vast majority of both Republican and Democratic politicians are pushing for increased governmental intervention in energy markets. In "The Case against Government Intervention in Energy Markets," author Richard L. Gordon argues that the prevailing policy proposals are premised on a misunderstanding of energy economics and market realities. Intervention, says Gordon, would only serve to repeat and extend previous errors.
