CloseUp a monthly roundup of research on the issues that confuse, inspire and outrage.

Survey Says

Survey Says ...

Instead of looking at a specific topic in this month's CloseUp, we've decided instead to focus on a specific methodological tool, surveys. Whether using them to ask one question or twenty, nonprofits employ surveys to take the pulse of the people they help. By analyzing the experiences, actions, and opinions of a group of individuals, surveys are able to gauge the nuances of an issue that number-driven or one-on-one interview work can't always identify. Check it out.

Are We There Yet? A Communications Evaluation Guide

The Communications Network

This month's featured report touches on a topic that is much discussed by nonprofit professionals but little understood. The sector hardly lacks expertise in how to communicate or in how to evaluate our activities - but what we often lack is a clear way to apply evaluation methods to our own communications efforts.

This newly released guide provides hands-on tools for evaluation as well as insightful case studies and a much-needed perspective on why evaluating communications even matters!

For some background on the issue of evaluations, and specifically the evaluation of communications, explore our literature review related to the topic.

Opening Up Education: The Collective Advancement of Education through Open Technology, Open Content, and Open KnowledgeIssueLab has partnered with the Hewlett Foundation's Education Program to create a research archive dedicated to the field of Open Education Resources (OER). One of the many research works included in this special collection is a unique set of essays by leaders in the open education movement describing the successes, challenges, and opportunities they have found in the field. We encourage you to check it out.

The OER research collection is a great example of what we call an IssueLab SubDomain, a special subset of IssueLab's larger collection made to look and feel like the web site of a partner organization. If you are interested in learning more about bringing a similar level of interactivity and reach to your own research collection, check out our new products and services.
