Whatever one’s view of past American wars and conflicts and the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, all Americans support our military personnel serving there and admire their courage and their sacrifices to keep our nation free and safe from terrorism.
Approximately one in six returning Iraqi War soldiers suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), severe depression or anxiety, often accompanied by alcohol or other drug abuse and addiction. Of these soldiers, fewer than 40 percent seek any form of mental health care, and fewer than 10 percent of those with alcohol problems are even referred for treatment. Without such care, they cannot function in our society, hold down jobs or raise families. Many join the homeless population; some are even driven to commit suicide.

Meet Aaron Hogue, PhD, CASA’s Associate Director of the Health and Treatment Research and Analysis Division. He is a licensed clinical psychologist who received his BA from Columbia University and doctorate from Temple University in 1994. His research interests include the development of family-based interventions for adolescent drug use and delinquency, adherence and process research on family intervention models, and case management services for adult substance users and their families who receive public assistance.
