This Almanac is divided into five sections and 50 State Reports:
Section I: About America's Second Harvest -- The Nation's Food Bank Network
This section features the history and current work of our organization. In addition to highlighting donation and program information, this section details the many functions of the Departments of Public Policy and Research. These departments conduct research and policy advocacy through unique projects including the landmark quadrennial study Hunger in America 2006 and the annual Network Activity Report.
Section II: Federal Nutrition Programs
This section contains thorough narratives on federal nutrition programs. These descriptions incorporate history, facts, and eligibility requirements of critical programs.
Section III: National Statistics on Hunger and Poverty in America
This section offers a statistical picture of hunger in America with a collection of charts, graphs, and rankings. This section's data is vital to understanding the nature and scope of hunger in our country. Sections II and III offer valuable context to the extensive state data found in Section IV of this book.
Section IV: State-By-State Statistics on Hunger and Poverty in America:
This section compiles data never before collected into one resource. For each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, we provide:
- a detailed map of Network Member service areas and congressional districts
- basic demographics
- indicators of poverty
- nutrition program participation information
In addition, exclusive data compilation and analysis from America's Second Harvest's Research and Analysis Department supplies state-by-state information from our most recent Network Activity Report.
Section V: Resources
This section features important materials including:
- U.S. Census Bureau Poverty Thresholds
- Poverty Guidelines from the United States Department of Health and Human Services
- and a Food Stamp Program Eligibility Cap Chart
The Almanac is a unique and valuable tool for policymakers and advocates or anyone committed to finding solutions to the problem of hunger in America.
