Road Diets are a Smart Transportation solution that can help achieve roadway safety, access, and design objectives. A typical road diet strategy reduces the number of travel lanes on a roadway cross-section. One of the most common applications of a road diet is to convert a four-lane roadway into three lanes. The excess pavement can provide bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and/or on-street parking. This brochure discusses the characteristics, safety benefits, capacity impacts, place-making improvements, and costs of road diet projects. Guidelines for road diet projects are included, along with examples from the Delaware Valley region.
