Access to antenatal care early in pregnancy is vital to protect the health and lives of women and girls. In South Africa, however, even though such care is free, many women and girls do not attend clinics until the later stages of their pregnancy. This has grave consequences for their health, and can be fatal in a country where around a third of pregnant women are living with HIV and three-quarters are living in poverty. The report calls on the South African authorities to remove these barriers, so that women and girls can access their right to health.
