Through their eyes: Cambridge youth reflect on our city - Cambridge Community Foundation 2021 Annual Report

Through their eyes: Cambridge youth reflect on our city - Cambridge Community Foundation 2021 Annual Report

2022-01-28

Cambridge Community Foundation;

In this annual report we want to lift up the voices of our youth, the people who will one day inherit the new Cambridge. They often see inconvenient truths and have insights that can only come from the young. In some cases, they are already launching innovative solutions to the problems that they feel most deeply. In this way, they inspire us to discover and support social innovation wherever it exists, whether in our universities, our entrepreneurial culture, or in 10-year-old Aviana Dupee and other young people you will read about in this report.At our core we aspire to champion everyone who imagines a just and equitable city where we can all thrive. We fund grassroots leaders who use their lived experience to find solutions to local problems. We invest in innovative programs, like Cambridge RISE, which changes the lives of single parents and grandparents who are caring for children and struggling with everyday expenses. We form partnerships with nonprofits, civic leaders, universities, and donors to help good ideas take root.We exist to protect the qualities that make Cambridge the city you love. And, of course, we exist to create a better city for the young people who speak so eloquently on the following pages.

Funding to Meet Changing Realities: LGBTI Organisations on the State of Funding in Europe and Central Asia

Funding to Meet Changing Realities: LGBTI Organisations on the State of Funding in Europe and Central Asia

2022-01-11

ILGA-Europe;

ILGA-Europe continues our needs assessment work in partnership with Strength in Numbers to make a case to both better align and increase funding for the work of LGBTI organisations in Europe and Central Asia.The first funding needs assessment was done in 2017 with the intention to shine a light on the activities undertaken by LGBTI organisations, particularly those that are underfunded compared to the importance that organisations give to them. The 2021 needs assessment continues this work, with additional intentions to detect changes in the funding landscape, as well as collect additional data about the lived realities of LGBTI activists and organisations operating in the context of COVID-19, and in many countries, anti-LGBTI and/or anti-gender rhetoric, threats and attacks. Ultimately, ILGA-Europe monitors the funding landscape with an eye to moving towards sustainability for LGBTI organisations, ensuring LGBTI people on the ground can access the services they need and are free from discrimination.Where sufficient data are available, it highlights disparities between regions, so donors and activists can be aware of gaps in resources identified by LGBTI activists. ILGA-Europe would like to see the report used as a tool to continue conversations between donors and movements to increase the funding available and align the priorities of donors with the needs and opportunities experienced by LGBTI movements. The report is also intended to reach LGBTI organisations, including ILGA-Europe members, with a view to enhancing our collective understanding of how funding can support the work of our movements.

Paul G. Allen Family Foundation: Impact Report 2021

Paul G. Allen Family Foundation: Impact Report 2021

2022-01-31

Paul G. Allen Family Foundation;

Without question, it has been another challenging year. In 2021, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation continued to respond to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also managing its robust conservation and ocean health portfolio and supporting new arts and culture projects in the Pacific Northwest.During the rollercoaster of the pandemic, we focused on the needs of our neighbors, particularly underserved communities in our region. This geographic focus enabled deeper and more impactful efforts. We also operated with increased flexibility as emergency situations demanded; given the rapidly evolving nature of the pandemic, we provided trusted partners who have strong roots in communities with greater freedom and flexibility, allowing them to respond to new challenges more quickly.Similarly, we have seen the benefits of grants that support and place trust in Indigenous communities, who are the best stewards of our planet. We also reinforced the power of collaboration – for both funding and knowledge sharing. Tackling formidable challenges requires true partnership with like-minded organizations because working together we can move the impact needle further and faster than just working solo.Building on the work we covered in the 2020 Decade of Impact Report, we remain inspired by our grantees and partners across the Pacific Northwest and around the globe and remain optimistic about the future. The report that follows highlights some of the progress we have seen this year and offers a preview of some of what is to come.

COVID-19 KNOWLEDGE AND IMPACT ACROSS ILLINOIS REGIONS: THE LATINO EXPERIENCE

COVID-19 KNOWLEDGE AND IMPACT ACROSS ILLINOIS REGIONS: THE LATINO EXPERIENCE

2022-03-25

Illinois Migrant Council;

With the rise of future COVID-19 variants and shift towards an endemic public health strategy, the urgency to reach those historically more affected by pandemics is stronger than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has proved to be no exception to these trends, with low income and minority communities encompassing more risk to the virus1 due to several factors such as chronic conditions, longer and more dangerous work hours, and decreased access to healthcare. The social determinants of health play a key role in the well-being of these individuals, with even those who do not have underlying health conditions being at a greater risk due to stress and deprivation weakening immune systems. Overall, Hispanic/Latinos and other minority communities require more outreach efforts and the results of this survey highlights areas in which our current COVID-19 response can be improved.

Making the Case: Philanthropy’s Role in the Movement to Reimagine Criminal Justice

Making the Case: Philanthropy’s Role in the Movement to Reimagine Criminal Justice

2022-03-31

Bridgespan Group;

Bridgespan's experience and relationships working with institutional foundations and philanthropists created an opportunity to dive into the common challenges we've heard funders navigate: What role could philanthropy play in movement building in criminal justice reform? How might mindset and practice need to shift to enable effective giving to movement?The purpose of this report is to provide guidance for some of those common challenges by offering the perspectives and wisdom of those doing the work. Our research included interviews with more than 40 movement leaders, funders, and others across the ecosystem seeking transformative change of our criminal legal system, as well as a review of literature to understand how social movements can achieve equitable change.Bridgespan recognizes that this research is indebted to the work of many others who have long been thinking about these issues deeply. We hope to contribute to that ongoing conversation and the fight for equity and justice.

Rebuilding Trust: 2021 Annual Report

Rebuilding Trust: 2021 Annual Report

2022-05-23

Kofi Annan Foundation;

Twenty years ago, our multilateral system, led by Kofi Annan, was able to develop effective solutions to massive challenges such as the toll taken by HIV/AIDS on African vulnerable populations. New institutions were put in place including the International Criminal Court or the Human Rights Council that carried the promise of justice on a global scale, while agreement was reached on the ambitious Millennium Development Goals.Today, as the world faces challenges that dwarf even the COVID pandemic, progress in multilateral fora seems impossible except on the smallest of common denominators. War, aggressive nationalism and authoritarianism have returned. We seem incapable of turning the tide of confrontation and violence.Technology and experience have given us the tools to predict conflicts, pandemics, climate change and other shocks and crises. And yet we seem unable to prevent them from happening. When they do occur, we can rely on elaborate mechanisms and a solid legal framework to facilitate international cooperation. And yet many leaders choose to ignore them and flout internationally agreed rules and standards.The Kofi Annan Foundation will carry on promoting a legacy of principled leadership and effective cooperation. With other members of the Board, I will continue to advocate obstinately for a greater focus on the vulnerable, for more innovative partnerships, for more effective prevention and for a reinvigorated multilateral system.

Private Foundation Giving to Commercial DAFs

Private Foundation Giving to Commercial DAFs

2022-03-24

Institute for Policy Studies;

Private foundations are currently allowed to make grants to DAFs and to count those grants toward their annual charitable distribution requirement. We examined the 2016-2018 tax returns of private foundations filing electronically to see how many of their contributions went to the 45 largest national commercial DAF sponsors in the U.S, including those affiliated with wealth management firms such as Fidelity Investments and Goldman Sachs. We discovered that private foundation grants to commercial DAFs averaged $737 million per year from 2016 to 2018, and more than $934 million in 2018 alone.

Unlocking Cross-border Philanthropy in Asia: An Assessment of Donor Interest and Infrastructure Readiness

Unlocking Cross-border Philanthropy in Asia: An Assessment of Donor Interest and Infrastructure Readiness

2022-06-15

Asia Philanthropy Circle;

When Give2Asia was founded 20 years ago, international philanthropy primarily flowed in one direction, as donors in the West supported nonprofits in other locales. Strong tax incentives for charitable giving fueled a steady increase in overseas philanthropy.Today, the landscape of potential donors is far more diverse. With increasing levels of wealth across the Asia-Pacific, there is great potential to address pressing humanitarian needs by increasing funding flows between countries in the Global South.Produced in cooperation with the Asia Philanthropy Circle, King Baudouin Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this report provides a roadmap for establishing a cross-border giving network for Asia.The multi-year research effort included interviews with 150 high-net-worth donors/institutions and survey responses from 135 nonprofits. The study aims to answer two key questions:1) Is there an appetite and need for infrastructure that supports cross-border giving within Asia?2) If so, what institutions might participate in building it, and where?

Lighting the Way: A Report for Philanthropy on the Power and Promise of Feminist Movements

Lighting the Way: A Report for Philanthropy on the Power and Promise of Feminist Movements

2022-05-05

Bridgespan Group;

Feminist movements are powerhouses for social change, but they are under-resourced, undervalued, and grossly underestimated. New Bridgespan research with Shake the Table shares five recommendations for funders on how to find and fund feminist movements, and calls on philanthropy to invest an additional $6 billion in them by 2026.

Sprouting Our Collective Wisdom: Towards a Politics of Practice for Activist-led Accompaniment: Lessons from the Global Resilience Fund

Sprouting Our Collective Wisdom: Towards a Politics of Practice for Activist-led Accompaniment: Lessons from the Global Resilience Fund

2022-06-13

Purposeful;

We have chosen the title 'Spouting Our Collective Wisdom' as an ode to the collective knowledge and learning that has emerged from different corners of the world during the pandemic. We draw inspiration from the natural world, the cycles of growth, of co-dependence, metamorphosis, and the connectivity across ecosystems in nature around us. Through our relationships across our work in the Global Resilience Fund (GRF), with activists and funders, we have created an environment for ongoing learning, unlearning, reflection and for sprouting new ideas and experimenting with care, love and friendship as our guide.This report gives an overview of the Global Resilience Fund's activist-led accompaniment with early reflections and observations. Our intention is to inspire others to center the vision and leadership of girls and young activists in providing accompaniment, and for others to learn from our experience.

Right Livelihood Annual Report 2021

Right Livelihood Annual Report 2021

2022-06-22

Right Livelihood;

As we look back on 2021, we see a pivotal year behind us. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to promote the work of Laureates worldwide, while also taking important steps towards developing Right Livelihood as an organisation.We were especially grateful that all 2021 Laureates were able to travel to Stockholm in person for the Award Presentation in December--the personal contact with them and between them was invaluable.In 2021, we redesigned our look and launched a new website to better serve Laureates and our audiences. We believe that the ground-breaking solutions presented by the Laureates must be spread globally. For this reason, our new website and design concept have become more editorial to help audiences connect with Laureates and their work.
